My undergraduate degree is in Psychology, and after getting my baccalaureate, it looked like having a BS in Psychology, and 50 cents, would buy you a cup of coffee (meaning it was worthless), so, I applied for and was accepted in the Masters program at my alma mater, but after being there a week, the master's program was much different than I anticipated, because, like a Southwest cattleman's field, it was full of so much bovine feces, it was intolerable ( I don't know if you've been in a scorching field full of bull excrement in July, but , it's the closest thing you can get to being in a master's program in Psychology).

My late uncle was in a field dealing with the mind, but he was a Psychiatrist, specializing in Psychoanalysis (more BS if you ask me, "Pappa Freud" being a bit on the , "odd" side, shall we say), but the difference between my late uncle, and the psycho-logist, Ms. Mercer, is that he could prescribe drugs, had more clout when he talked, and went to school a hell of a lot longer.

That being said, PhD "Dr." Mercer's attack on the ability of Chiropractic to help children with the purported "disease" of ADHD is found, for your amusement, at

Now, to see a writer's style, sometimes I look at the last line of their piece.

The last line of her article, declares for all the world to see, how totally ignorant the woman is about Chiropractic. Her last line, I quote :

"By the way, when did the adjective "chiropractic" become a noun?"
Well, PhD "Doctor" Mercer, the answer to that is 1895, when Chiropractic began. It is a noun in the same way that medicine (as in, the practice of medicine) is a noun. It makes me wonder where you went to school, that they would graduate someone SO STUPID, that they would write an article attacking a discipline they obviously, haven't exercised the least bit of scholastic enterprise to gain insight into.

But, since you obviously are not a fan of Chiropractic, let's talk about YOUR little profession, and the lack of efficacy of its methods, shall we ?

Number one, I find it odd that you are in a backhanded way attacking Chiropractic, since psychology and Chiropractic are both under attack from the SOPP movement (Scope of Practice Partnership), in which the AMA would like nothing better than both Doctors of Chiropractic and Psychologists, to be legally barred from diagnosing their own patients. Thus, if SOPP has their way, you would not be able to even DIAGNOSE a case of ADHD. For more on SOPP, see my blog at http://STOPSOPP.blogspot.com.

Now, as far as efficacy of methods, and outcomes basing, name ONE condition, disease, mental illness, that you can guarantee you can successfully cure someone of, PhD "Dr" Mercer ! Please name it and be ready to defend your assertion. Psychology has a LOUSY history of treating and curring ANYONE.

Firstly, IS PSYCHOLOGY A "REAL" SCIENCE ? I think if PhD "Dr" Mercer wants to do a diatribe about how someone else is not following good evidenciary protocols in designing a study, perhaps she needs to meet the Daubert standard as an expert in science herself.

"The items listed above inevitably create an atmosphere in which absolutely anything goes (at least temporarily), judgments about efficacy are utterly subjective, and as a result, the field of psychology perpetually splinters into cults and fads (examples below). “Studies” are regularly published that would never pass muster with a self-respecting peer review committee from some less soft branch of science.

If society correctly evaluated human psychology as a loose grouping of subjective cults and fads, the above summary would not pose any kind of social problem. But in fact there are people who still think human psychology is based in science, all evidence to the contrary. The sad result is that society's engine of legal and social authority is sometimes steered by psychology, sometimes with unjust and terrible consequences. Here is a brief list of historical examples in which psychology's bogus status as a science has produced harm (it is by no means a comprehensive list):

During World War I, psychologist R. M. Yerkes oversaw the testing of 1.7 million US Army draftees. His questionable conclusions were to have far-reaching consequences, leading to a 1924 law placing severe limitations on the immigration of those groups Yerkes and his followers believed to be mentally unfit – Jews and Eastern Europeans in particular. Yerkes later thoroughly recanted his methods and findings in an 800-page confession/tome that few bothered to read, and the policies he set in motion had the dreadful side effect of preventing the immigration of Jews trying to escape the predations of Hitler and his henchmen later on.
The original test results happened to dovetail with Yerkes' explicit eugenic beliefs, a fact lost on nearly everyone at the time.
In an effort to answer the question of whether intelligence is primarily governed by environment or genes, psychologist Cyril Burt (1883-1971) performed a long-term study of twins that was later shown to be most likely a case of conscious or unconscious scientific fraud. His work, which purported to show that IQ is largely inherited, was used as a “scientific” basis by various racists and others, and, despite having been discredited, still is.
- In the 1950s, at the height of psychology's public acceptance, neurologistWalter Freeman created a surgical procedure known as "prefrontal lobotomy." As though on a quest and based solely on his reputation and skills of persuasion, Freeman singlehandedly popularized lobotomy among U.S. psychologists, eventually performing about 3500 lobotomies, before the dreadful consequences of this practice became apparent.
  At the height of Freeman's personal campaign, he drove around the country in a van he called the "lobotomobile," performing lobotomies as he traveled. There was plenty of evidence that prefrontal lobotomy was a catastrophic clinical practice, but no one noticed the evidence or acted on it. There was — and is — no reliable mechanism within clinical psychology to prevent this sort of abuse.
These examples are part of a long list of people who have tried to use psychology to give a scientific patina to their personal beliefs, perhaps beginning with Francis Galton (1822-1911), the founder and namer of eugenics. Galton tried (and failed) to design psychological tests meant to prove his eugenic beliefs. This practice of using psychology as a personal soapbox continues to the present, in fact, it seems to have become more popular.
What these accounts have in common is that no one was able (or willing) to use scientific standards of evidence to refute the claims at the time of their appearance, because psychology is only apparently a science. Only through enormous efforts and patience, including sometimes repeating an entire study using the original materials, can a rare, specific psychological claim be refuted. Such exceptions aside, there is ordinarily no recourse to the “testable, falsifiable claims” criterion that sets science apart from ordinary human behavior.
One might think that psychology might have learned from its past errors and evolved into a more strict and scientific enterprise. In fact the reverse seems to be the case. Here are two contemporary examples:
Facilitated Communication
This bogus field sprang into existence, fueled by the wish that specific disabled (autistic, severely retarded) people might be able to communicate with their loved ones after all. It purports to allow communication with a disabled person through the agency of a facilitator, someone who typically holds a writing implement (or operates a keyboard) simultaneously with the disabled person, and the two together create a written account of the disabled person's otherwise inaccessible experiences. Frequently, the “communication” seems to reveal that the disabled person is being abused horribly by parents or caretakers. This in turn has resulted in bogus legal actions, spurred by prosecutors who think psychology is a science.
Was this set of beliefs tested and shown to be flawed in a scientific study? No. Was it called into question because of the utterly fantastic content of the “communications”? No again. How then was the fraud uncovered? Well, the PBS television program “Frontline” showed up and taped some typical clinical practice, revealing some aspects of the practice anyone not brain-damaged should have been able to notice, such as the fact that the disabled person was often looking at the ceiling while supposedly coöperating in keyboard communication, a behavior that requires one to look at the keyboard at least occasionally. The facilitator, of course, was looking intently at the keyboard.
And finally, after evidence of the bogus nature of both the practice and the communications was demonstrated, was the field abandoned? Of course not – it is still widely practiced, with the difference that TV cameras are now typically excluded from the clinics.
Recovered Memory Therapy
In this variation on the above bogus practice, talk-therapy clients are guided to “recovering” repressed memories, typically of horrible childhood abuse, sexual and otherwise. And, like the above practice, these “recovered memories” sometimes cause people to be jailed for vivid, if imaginary, crimes.
In this case, unlike the above, over time the frequency and implausibility of the actionable claims ruined everything for the eager practitioners, and most clients later decided they were talked into the “memories” by the therapist. There have been a number of lawsuits by disgruntled former clients, and wrongly convicted people have been freed.
But, just as in the case of “facilitated communication,” science played no role in either the creation or destruction of this aberration, this fad. Science played no part in the creation of either field, although properly designed experiments could have been used at the outset to prove that both fads were not remotely what their advocates claimed. And science had little role to play in the later debunking, because psychology is only coincidentally addressed by science.
Some may object that the revolution produced by psychoactive drugs has finally placed psychology on a firm scientific footing, but the application of these drugs is not psychology, it is pharmacology. The efficacy of drugs in treating conditions once thought to be psychological in origin simply presents another example where psychology got it wrong, and the errors could only be uncovered using disciplines outside psychology.
To summarize this section, psychology is the sort of field that can describe things, but as shown above, it cannot reliably explain what it has described. In science, descriptions are only a first step — explanations are essential:
- An explanation, a theory, allows one to make a prediction about observations not yet made.
- A prediction would permit a laboratory test that might support or falsify the underlying theory.
- The possibility of falsification is what distinguishes science from cocktail chatter. "
  
  HMMMM....OK, some great points that would TEND, or "SUGGEST"
  strongly, that Psychology is NOT a "real science" in the usual sense of the word.
  
  There is an old saying about the pot calling the kettle black, and this is an apt saying with regard to this silly and groundless attack of Phd "Dr" Mercer's attack on this study.
Prove that YOU have the ability to have repeatable accounts and that you have ANY efficacy of curing ANY condition, illness, or disease which is within your scope of practice PdD "Dr" Mercer. Psychology, as was previously pointed out, tends to be a collection of cults, who view the world and people through the eyes of whichever Psychology Guru they follow, whether it be Jung, Freud, Adler, or whoever.

My undergraduate degree in the discipline was extremely easy for me to get because, the field is based on so much touchy feely crap. Unlike organic chemistry, where one can perform the Grignard reaction over and over and get the same result, you could administer the MMPI to the same person on several trials and get different results.

You could have a normal person go to five different "psychologists" and get five different "diagnoses".

So, "Dr" Mercer, how many children with ADHD have YOU cured ? How many ADULTS with ADHD have you see ANYONE cure ? How many cases of paranoid schizophrenia have you cured ? How many cases of bipolar disorder have you "cured"?

Since you liked to end your idiotic piece with a question, then so shall I.

In it, Mackey argued that "the last thing our country needs is a massive new health-care entitlement that will create hundreds of billions of dollars of new unfunded deficits and move us much closer to a government takeover of our health-care system." He presented, instead, The Whole Foods Alternative to ObamaCare:

1. "Remove the legal obstacles that slow the creation of high-deductible health insurance plans and health savings accounts."
2. "Equalize the tax laws so that employer-provided health insurance and individually owned health insurance have the same tax benefits."
3. Allow competition across state lines.
4. "Repeal government mandates regarding what insurance companies must cover."
5. "Enact tort reform."
6. "Make costs transparent."
7. "Enact medicare reform."
8. Revise tax law to make it easier to donate to those without insurance."

1. Insurance companies are certainly a problem, but he does not spell out these "legal obstacle". Actually, there are none, since insurance companies are so
poorly regulated in my experience, they get away with murder. We have around
50 million with no health care insurance because of the draconian rules of

owners don't / can't offer it to their employees. Tax breaks will have no substantial effect, and as a small business owner, I can tell you that.

This last one really shows how OUT OF TOUCH Mackey the Lackey is with the working man, and shows how really retarded the "trickle downers" are. The notion that the rich, who often got to be rich by ripping other people off, and having predatory business methods, suddenly get hearts of gold and start shelling out billions for those without insurance, smacks of the kind of retardation that George Bush had.

Revealed: How a Nurse of the Year wasn't actually a nurse

A doctor's assistant allegedly spent $2,000 to stage a dinner honouring herself as 'Nurse of the Year' - when she wasn't even registered as a nurse.

Betty Lichtenstein, 56, of Norwalk, Connecticut, was charged with reckless endangerment and criminal impersonation charges yesterday for her stunt.

She seemed competent enough to other staff at her clinic - she handled injections and gave medical advice, she was even named the Connecticut Nursing Association's "Nurse of the Year" in 2008.

But according to the arrest warrant, that association did not hand her an award - in fact, the association does not even exist.

Betty Lichtenstein held a dinner in her own honour as 'Nurse of the Year' - despite not being licensed to practice

While working for the doctor, she injected medications and gave medical advice to patients, according to her arrest warrant.

The affidavit also states that in November 2008 she received the 2008 Nurse of the Year award at a dinner supposedly hosted by the Connecticut Nursing Association.

Investigators in the Medicaid Fraud Control Unit in the Office of the Chief State's Attorney's office determined that no such organization exists and that she paid $2,000 of her own money to stage the event.

According to local reports, the doctor, his staff and a number of his patients received a letter with the letterhead of the 'Connecticut Nursing Association;,

'The letter stated there would be a special dinner to honor Betty Lichtenstein [and that she] was to receive a $10,000 personal award and an additional $10,000 was to go to the charity of her choice.

On Nov. 30, the award dinner took place at the Norwalk Inn, and the doctor for whom Lichtenstein worked was a guest speaker, according to the warrant.

Forty-one dinners were served and the inn sent a bill for $3,211.11 to the Connecticut Nursing Association in care of Lichtenstein's employer's office. She then wrote a check for $2,168.02, again according to the warrant.

'Nurse Betty' worked at neurologist Dr. Gerald Weiss's office in Norwalk

The investigations began after a patient complained about Lichtenstein.

She was also arrested three months ago at a local pharmacy, charged with illegally obtaining prescription painkillers,

She has been arraigned until August 26 and, if convicted, faces up to five years in prison.

Lichtenstein did not return calls for a comment.

DENTON, Texas — Two doctors who were once married have been arrested for allegedly writing prescriptions for controlled substances without having the proper authorization to do so.

Dr. Odette Campbell, 54, and Dr. Jeffrey Lewis, 64, were arrested Thursday as part of a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration investigation, according to Denton police Detective Rachel Fleming.

Campbell is charged with fraudulent use of a controlled substance registration number while Lewis faces two counts of the same charge and is under a $40,000 bail. Campbell was released from the Denton city jail Friday afternoon on $20,000 bail. She did not immediately respond to a phone message left at her home Saturday seeking comment.

Denton Sheriff's Office spokesman Tom Reedy said Lewis was in the Denton County Jail Saturday.

Fleming said Campbell's federal registration number was suspended Tuesday morning when DEA agents served her with a license suspension during an ongoing investigation, The Denton Record-Chronicle reported.

Authorities say that Campbell, a radiation oncologist, arranged for Lewis, an ophthalmologist who is her ex-husband, to write pain prescriptions for her patients. But he no longer had valid registration with the DEA, according to arrest affidavits, The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.

Doctors are required to have both a federal and state registration number to write prescriptions for controlled substances, including hydrocodone, Fleming said.

Fleming said investigators found prescriptions written by Lewis for pain medication for her patients, although he was unauthorized to do so, Fleming said.

Lewis issued a statement saying he was unaware his DEA license had expired.

"I had not looked at it in a year. In my mind, I thought it expired at the end of August," he said.

Lewis, who practiced medicine in the Denton area for 28 years, said he moved to Fairfield, Iowa, last year and had been visiting family in Denton for the last few months. When Campbell asked him to help her out in her medical office after receiving a DEA license suspension, he complied and treated about 10 patients, some of whom he prescribed diazepam or hydrocodone, he said.

SAY NO TO A MEDICAL BOARD MONOPOLY OF ACUPUNCTURE

The State Medical Board of Texas, if it gets its way through full passage of Texas Senate Bill 1314 (SB1314) would have authoritarian, draconian, and monopolistic control of the practice of acupuncture regardless of the nature of the practitioner, and in light of the actions of the TMA (Texas Medical Association), it is clear that this would be the immediate end of Chiropractic doctors' ability to practice acupuncture, or use acupuncture needles in the treatment of patients. This probably would also forbid Chiropractic doctors (many unfortunately use the term "chiropractors" which I dislike) from even doing the earlobe staples for weight control, or control of nicotine addiction in Texas. The Medical Board, in my opinion, would like nothing more than the elimination of Chiropractic, and the ability to put every complementary and alternative health system in subordination to them. The bill has passed the Texas Senate, so the last stand would be for the House of Representatives to vote it down. PLEASE contact YOUR House of Representatives representative and stress as strongly as possible, this is a bad bill, doesn't do anything good, but actually interferes with holistic health care in Texas,

We sometimes find someone who thinks so much like us, that they say, they are a man or woman after my own heart.

Happily, I found one.

I was having a discussion with a nurse who said that one cc (cubic centimeter) was exactly the same thing as one mL (milliliter). I told her that 1) mL is the preferred term of art, and that 2) they are not exactly the same.

She did not agree. So, as Dr. John usually does, I used other sources to prove up my case !

Unfortunately, 1ml does not equal 1cc. There is a difference when you go to 5 decimal places.

The metric system has it roots in Paris in 1793. In addition to decimal system proposals, units of length, mass and volume were provisionally created. (A brass standard of the provisional metre was made: it is preserved in the Conservatoire des Arts et Métiers, Paris.) This was when the LITRE was first defined as a measure for liquids, this being an appropriately sized volume for commercial use. As the 19th century drew to a close, very precise measurements were needed in the fields of Physics, Chemistry and engineering. In 1889 the "Standard Kilogramme" was created. This was supposed to be the same as 1 litre of distilled water at its maximum density -ie. at a temperature of 4 degrees celsius. The LITRE then became officially defined as 1 kilogramme of pure water at 4°C. Unfortunately there was a very small error and it was not until 1907 that it was detected. The "1889 Standard kilogramme" was discovered to have a mass of 1000.028 cc of pure water at 4°C and so it followed that a LITRE was 1000.028 cc. A decision was taken to leave the kilogramme as the "Standard" but to divide the LITRE into 1000 equal parts and to call this division by a new name the millilitre (ml).
From 1907 millilitres were used as the standard unit of liquid and volume measurement.
So 1 millilitre then equalled 1.000028 cc and 1 cc equalled 0.999972 ml.
Accordingly 1 millilitre of pure water at 4°C had a mass of 1 gramme

In 1964 the General Conference of Weights and Measurements re-defined the LITRE as a true measurement of volume and so equal to 1000 centimetres cubed (cm3 or cc). This changed the specification of the litre, by the fact that its new definition is directly related to the metre as a measurement of volume and no longer to the kilogramme.
However, the millilitre remained as per the original specification and the ml calibration of scientific vessels used in very accurate analytical work is not 1/1000th of a litre where a litre = 1000cc, but where 1ml of pure water at 4°C has a mass of 1 gramme.
So 1ml does not equal 1cc

The Nation -- In 1971, Edgar Kaiser, the son of the founder of Kaiser Permanente, one of the first big HMOs, went to see John Ehrlichman, a top aide to President Nixon, to lobby the Nixon White House to pass legislation that would expand the market for health maintenance organizations (HMOs). Ehrlichman reported this conversation to Nixon on February 17, 1971. The discussion, which was taped, went like this:
Ehrlichman: I had Edgar Kaiser come in...talk to me about this and I went into it in some depth. All the incentives are toward less medical care, because the less care they give them, the more money they make.
President Nixon: Fine.
The next day, Nixon publicly announced he would be pushing legislation that would provide Americans "the finest health care in the world."
When tapes of the Nixon-Ehrlichman conversation and Nixon's subsequent public statement are played halfway through Michael Moore's new movie SiCKO, it is one of the film's more revealing moments. By this point in the film, Moore has already demonstrated that health insurance companies and HMOs are parasitic villains that routinely deny necessary medical care to make more bucks--even when their money-grubbing leads to the death of patients. Looking for the original sin that led to the present mess, Moore zeroes in on this Nixonian moment, which encapsulates the film's premise: in the United States health care system there is a fundamental conflict: profit versus care, and--no surprise--profit beats care.
Moore makes this point magnificently in SiCKO, which is the best film in the Moore canon. I say this as one who had a mixed reaction to Fahrenheit 9/11. (See here.)This time around, Moore has crafted a tour de force that his enemies will have a tough time blasting (though they will still try). It's not as tendentious as his earlier works. It posits no conspiracy theories. The film skillfully blends straight comedy, black humor, tragedy, and advocacy. You laugh, you cry--literally. And you get mad.
The film stitches together a string of health care horror stories. Moore opens the movie by looking at two cases involving Americans who don't have health insurance. One fellow who sliced off the tips of two fingers is told at the hospital that he can attach the ring finger for $12,000 and the middle finger for $60,000. He can't afford both. Ever the romantic, Moore reports, this man opts to save his ring finger.
But SiCKO is not about the uninsured. It's about those who have insurance and who have been screwed. Moore began this project by advertising on the Web for tales of health care woe. Within a week, he had received 25,000 emails. That's plenty of raw material. One enterprising father of a child who was going deaf and whose insurance company would only pay for one ear implant wrote his insurance firm and asked if its CEOs would like to appear in Moore's film. The company--whaddayaknow--quickly authorized payment for the other implant.
From this flood of complaints, Moore drew compelling and heartbreaking stories. A woman is denied payment for a major procedure because she neglected to mention on her insurance application that she once had a yeast infection (which was, of course, unrelated to the procedure she needed). A mother loses her 18-month-old daughter because a hospital won't treat her without authorization from her insurance company and her insurer insists she takes the child (during an emergency situation) to an in-network hospital. A woman who was in a car crash is denied payment for an ambulance trip because she did not receive pre-approval for that cost. A man is denied a bone-marrow transplant that could save his life and dies.
Moore interviews health care industry insiders who confirm the worst suspicions. A former employee at a health insurance sales centers cries as she talks about how she was trained to handle prospective clients who might be health risks. "I'm such a bitch on the phone," she says. Doctors who worked for health care companies tell how they were encouraged to deny claims to save their companies money. Medical reviewers for one health insurance company who rendered the most denials received bonuses. Footage from a video surveillance camera shows a Los Angeles hospital dumping an indigent patient on Skid Row. "Who are we?" Moore asks. "Is this what we have become: a nation that dumps its own citizens?"
Moore's meta-message is, It doesn't have to be this way. He visits Canada, England, and France and compares their health care delivery systems to America's. He plays this for loads of yucks. In a British hospital, he goes looking for the place where a patient has to pay his or her bill. He cannot find such a check-out counter. Then--a-ha!--he finds a cashier. But--here comes the punch line--this is where the hospital hands out cash to patients who need a few pounds to cover the cost of their transportation home. Yes, in a British hospital you can leave with more money than you came in with.
What about those put-upon doctors who must work under the heavy yoke of Britain's National Health Service? He interviews a young doctor who drives a new Audi and lives in a posh million-dollar flat. The British system, the doc says, is fine for doctors--unless you want to live in a $3 million flat and own three or four cars. As for drugs, every prescription in England costs th equivalent of ten bucks--no matter what drug or how much of it. An American who blew out his shoulder trying to walk across the famous intersection at Abbey Road on his hands tells Moore that he obtained great hospital care for no money.
Ditto Canada. Ditto France. Doing his I-can't-believe-it act, Moore grills Americans and locals in each country who relate stories of receiving quality care for no payments. A Canadian doctor, with a straight face, says that he has "never told anyone we couldn't put a finger back on" because of a patient's inability to pay. In the land of surrender-monkeys, Moore discovers that government-paid doctors--Sacre bleu!--make house calls, and new parents are visited by federally-paid daycare providers. And get this: a fellow who completes chemo in France gets three months of paid leave to recuperate (on a beach in the south of France, no less). No wonder, the United States ranks 37th in the world when it comes to the health of its citizens, just edging out Slovenia.
Moore whacks the U.S. political system for catering to the needs of the insurance industry not the citizenry, pointing out that the health care lobby pumps millions of dollars into the campaigns of lawmakers. He notes that Senator Hillary Clinton, once the scourge of the health care industry, has become a top recipient of contributions from health care firms. (Movie mogul Harvey Weinstein, executive producer of the film and a friend of Hillary Clinton, pressed Moore to cut that part of the film. Moore turned him down. In a recent interview, Weinstein conceded he had asked Moore to delete this portion.)
In the film's climax, Moore gets on a boat in Miami with three 9/11 rescue workers who have been unable to obtain the necessary treatment for ailments apparently caused by their exposure to debris at Ground Zero. His mission: bring them and other health care industry victims to the Guatanamo detention facility in Cuba, where (according to the Bush administration and Republican congressional leaders) the detainees typically receive fine medical treatment. Gitmo, Moore cracks, is "the only place on American soil with free universal health care."
Moore's small flotilla approaches the camp. He takes out a bullhorn and shouts, I have three 9/11 rescue workers who need medical attention. He adds, They just want the kind of treatment al Qaeda is getting. No one in the guard tower responds. A siren goes off. Maybe we better leave, he says. Moore takes the rescue workers and the others to the Havana Hospital where they receive--as do all Cubans there--free quality treatment.
Sure, it's a stunt--but a telling one. One of the rescue workers is living on a monthly disability payment of $1000. Her inhaler costs $120, and she needs at least two a month. She breaks down and cries when she learns she can purchase the same drug in Cuba for five cents. Were she a suspected terrorist in Gitmo, she would get the device for free.
Moore's right. The health care system in the United States is a bad deal for many Americans. (Don't get me started about Oxford, which routinely denies almost every claim I submit for my family.) He glosses over some of the problems overseas (the French social welfare system is under much pressure), but debunks the hyperbolic scare-'em criticisms hurled at the Canadian and British systems by free-marketeers who defend the U.S. system. As for the charge that a universal health care system would be "socialized medicine," Moore rightfully counters that in the United States there's socialism when it comes to the public well-being; there are public schools, public fire departments, and public libraries. What about public health?
In the film, Canadians, Brits and French laugh at Americans for their cockamamie health care system. Explaining their own systems, they all say that it's a matter of communal security: we take care of each other. In other words, leave no citizen behind. Moore does not explicitly call for a particular set of reforms. But he clearly wants a taxpayer-funded system that cuts out the insurance companies and provides universal care to all.
Health care policy can be mind-numbingly complicated. Try to sort out the differences between Senator Barack Obama's health care plan and Senator John Edwards' proposal. And remember the wire chart the GOP cooked up for Hillary Clinton's proposed reform? But Moore, to his credit, cuts through the surface-level details and gets to the essentials. Why not health care for all? Why allow corporate profit-mongers to decide whether an 18-month-old girl lives or dies? Why is the population of the United States, as wealthy as this nation is, not as healthy as the population of Britain, France, Canada, and 33 other countries? Why settle for a sick system?
Advocates of universal health care (note I say care, not coverage) are hoping SiCKO leads to political change. The California Nurses Association, which supports a single-payer system, is organizing across the country in conjunction with the movie's appearance. It's hard to see a film moving a nation--and, in particular, the politicians who pocket all those health care industry dollars. But Moore has produced a work that maximizes his talents as social critic, humorist, filmmaker, journalist, and advocate. SiCKO is brilliantly funny and sad. It's a dead-on diagnosis. Don't get sick before seeing this film. "

Occasionally, one might hear the term
"foraminal stenosis". Basically, the nerves
exit or branch off the spinal cord, and pass
through the space between the vertebrae, a space
that is called the "intervertebral foramina" or
the "holes between the vertebrae, or spinal bones".
The space, in a normal healthy spine, especially
in the thoracic or lumbar spine, is shaped like a bean
or an ear. When the relationship of one vertebrae to
the one below or above it is altered, or if there are
spurs or osteophytes that form near the foramen,
or if there are disc displacements such as protrusions
or herniations, this disc, jutting into that space, can
also decrease the space for the nerve, and this situation,
i.e., the decrease of space for the nerve in the foramina,
is called "foraminal stenosis". This situation can result
in an increase in the partial pressures in the foraminal
space, and cause a virtual "pinched nerve", which more
often is not an actual pinch, such as you might pinch a piece
of cloth with your thumb and index finger, but is instead,
an increase in pressure on the nerve root, which can, and
often does, alter nerve function for the worse.

WELCOME TO THE DOCTORS IN LONGVIEW (TEXAS) BLOG.

Dr. John Raymond Baker ,DC is from a family of doctors, indeed, from a long line of doctors. Dr. Baker's uncle was a very well known and respected Medical Doctor
and Psychiatrist in Dallas Texas until his death. His cousin is an MD and pathologist in Dallas. His grandfather was a veterinarian during the Great Depression in Louisiana, and his great grandfather was a family practice MD. Farther on down in his family tree, on his mother's side, we were native Americans (Cherokee and Choctaw) and were medicine men of the tribes as far as is known.

Dr. Baker is the only doctor in the family to go into Chiropractic. People often bring up this issue of whether MDs get along with DCs. From my perspective, I have some excellent Medical Doctors who are friends of mine, and to whom I regularly refer patients for testing , treatment,
and / or evaluation. I have excellent neurosurgeons in Tyler , Dallas, and Mesquite. I have excellent orthopaedic surgeons in Dallas, and physiatrists (doctors practicing physical medicine) in Tyler Texas. We have formed effective multi-disciplinary alliances which benefit the patient greatly.

Prior to opening my practice in Longview, named BAKER CHIROPRACTIC, PA (A Professional Association) I worked at Smith Couny Healthcare. While there, I was in charge of the chronic pain treatment program there, and in that program, we have professional counselors and medical doctors, who, along with me as the Chiropractic doctor, comprised effective treatment teams.

The simple fact is that a GOOD doctor, puts your treatment first and your well being first. If there is another type of practitioner who MAY be able to help you, especially if he or she has already used up all their resources (which, for many MDs means, the drugs aren't working), then they should care enough about you as the patient, to refer you to someone else for another evaluation or to try a different course of treatment.

If Chiropractic care holds the possibility of help, and your medical doctor just doesn't "like" chiropractic or chiropractic doctors, and if he or she does not refer you for a trial of chiropractic, who is hurt? The MD is certainly not hurt. Does he or she care if YOU are hurt by not being given a chance?

Chiropractic has been around in the USA since around 1895, which, ironically, is around the time that X-Rays were first being brought into medical usage. For over a century, Chiropractic doctors have helped patients, and believe you me, if they were NOT bringing about positive changes in patient's help, they would not have survived in the highly competitve marketplace of healthcare.

If you have failed to get positive changes to your problem(s) with drugs, isn't it about time you tried the drugfree healthcare system?
